A hydrostatically driven municipal vehicle with all-wheel drive and with four-wheel steering serves as the base vehicle. The Road/Rail Equipped
Grinding Vehicle is equipped with a rail traveling gear which is also hydrostatically driven. The grinding unit consists of 12 grinding shafts for
grinding short-pitch corrugations, as well as for the reprofiling of girder and Trail rails. A dust vacuuming system is installed. However, as a dust
barrier and for protection against smolder fires in the track, on request a water spray system can also be installed. The grinding shafts and the rail
traveling gear are hydraulically driven, as are the angle adjustment and the feeding of the 12 grinding wheels. The machine can be used on both
standard and metric gauges. For use in subways the machine is equipped with particulate filters. With its compact outside dimensions the machine
can also be used within small structure gauges.

Rail Traveling Gear

Applications: For the derusting of new rails, for the elimination of short-pitch corrugations and short waves, as well as for the reprofiling of the rail head and the running edge. The RQ 8000-12 is capable of grinding both rails simultaneously.

Grinding principle

The AT 3329 rail grinding unit is designed firstly for the elimination of short-pitch corrugation and short waves, and secondly for the deburring and reprofiling of the rail head and running edge of Trail and girder rails. The unit can also be used for the derusting of new rails, or for the finish grinding of rail joints etc.

Grinding of short pitch corrugations

Short-pitch corrugations are small waves which form on the rail head and cause noise and wear to rolling stock. On short-pitch corrugation grinding the rail head is ground by six rotating grinding wheels which are arranged in three dual-shaft assemblies (see illustration below). The angle of each shaft assembly can be adjusted individually so that per pass three different facets can be ground. Depending on the depth of the corrugations, one to two passes are made with the same grinding angle. The rail head can reprofiled in multi-facet grinding by adjustment of the vertical axles of the grinding wheels (fig. C, page 4). The difference in angles and the number of individual facets is dependent on the rail shape or on the customer’s requirements (normally 5 - 6 facets). The grinding dust emissions are suctioned off by a high-power dust vacuuming system with spark pre-separator. The sparks themselves are narks themselves are not suctioned off. Instead, they are obstructed from exiting laterally by baffle plates

Deburring/reprofiling the running edge

After prolonged service of the rail the radius of the running edge can change, or lippings can occur. The following method is employed for the deburring and reprofiling of the running edges: Grinding with rotating grinding wheels, in which case the grinding shafts can be inclined steplessly up to 72°. For deburring, a fixed angular adjustment is sufficient. For reprofiling, depending on the desired radius accuracy multiple facets with an angular difference of approx. 15° are required (fig. D).
